Glossary term
3-layer laminate
Also known as: 3L
Shell, membrane and backer bonded as a single sandwich — the most durable laminate format, standard in technical alpine and expedition apparel.
Definition
3-layer laminates bond a knit or woven backer directly to the interior face of the membrane. The membrane is protected from abrasion, the hand-feel is crisper, and garment durability increases.
3L is the standard for hard-use technical apparel where long seam lifetime matters most.
Why it matters to DSEAMS
DSEAMS bonded seams are ideally matched to 3-layer laminate construction — preserving the uniform composite barrier that defines the format.
