Glossary term
Barrier membrane
Also known as: Barrier membrane film
The thin functional layer inside a laminate that blocks liquid water while allowing vapour to pass.
Definition
Membranes are the active component of a waterproof-breathable laminate. Common chemistries include expanded PTFE (ePTFE), polyurethane (PU) and hybrid constructions.
The membrane's performance characteristics define the laminate's overall waterproof and breathable numbers.
Why it matters to DSEAMS
DSEAMS bonds membrane-to-membrane at the seam, preserving the membrane's performance across the entire garment rather than interrupting it at every join.
Related terms
- ePTFEExpanded polytetrafluoroethylene — a microporous, hydrophobic membrane chemistry at the heart of many waterproof-breathable laminates.
- PU membraneA hydrophilic or microporous polyurethane film used as the barrier in waterproof-breathable laminates — typically lighter, stretchier and less expensive than ePTFE.
- Laminate constructionA textile assembled from two or more layers bonded together — typically a face fabric, a membrane and a lining or backer.
